Signs of Transmission Problems

Arthur's Transmissions Transmission Repairs in Greensboro

The following could indicate a problem with your transmission and will need to be checked out before a minor repair turns into a major repair.

  • When Shifting Gears Vehicle Shakes

Automatic transmissions that shift hard, shake or jerk during a shift change may mean your transmission fluid needs to be changed or that the fluid level is low.

  • Smell of Fluid Burning

Extremely hot transmission fluid has a distinct, acrid smell like burning rubber which could indicate a leak or dirty fluid that needs drained and replaced with new transmission fluid. Old, contaminated transmission fluid can be just as harmful to the engine and transmission as never changing the oil.

  • Noises in Neutral

Place your car in neutral and listen for unusual whining, groaning or ticking noises. Wear and tear on parts such as bearings or gear teeth often cause noises that indicate a failing transmission.

  • Slipping Gears

If your transmission is “slipping”, it may have an RPM of 3500+ or take a long time to coast. Also, there might be a delay in acceleration when you press on the gas, which could indicate that it's not transmitting sufficient power to the engine’s internal combustion part. Slipping gears can also occur from broken or worn out bands.

  • Your Vehicle Won’t Go Into Gear

Low transmission fluid can stop your car from engaging the drive or reverse gear, indicating a possible leak in the lines. For cars with manual transmissions, it could be a sign of a worn clutch plate if the vehicle manages to engage and creep a little bit forward.

  • Leaking Transmission Fluid

Transmission fluid leaks can be caused by loose pans, faulty gaskets, damaged toque converters or fluid lines, etc. and need to taken care of. A leak can cause extensive damage if ignored.

  • Check Engine Light

If your light is on, we may be able to perform a simple scan to determine the codes and possibly identify the problem.

We do NOT accept personal checks. We do accept cash, certified checks, debit cards and most credit cards. Payment in full is due before vehicle can be picked up.

Due to the complexity of transmissions, completion dates are an estimate only.
